How To Learn Copywriting from a Total Newb (In One Easy Step)
Let’s give a minute for the dust to settle from my bounce rate shooting through the roof after that headline.
Still here?
Awesome! My name is Evan Gilbert and I made Copy Junior, a mailing list for copywriters where I, a copy newb, teach as I learn. It contains information like
- How I got my first client within 24 hours of first making my Upwork profile (with no experience)
- Critiques of subscriber’s copy
- Strategies I’ve used to focus my studying and start improving fast
- Access to Copy Junior’s own ‘Copywriters Only’ survey and its results
- Interviews with copywriters at varying points in their careers. Copywriters like YOU. Many of my interviewees and guests are drawn from my subscriber list.
Not the type to opt-in blind huh?
Luckily for you, I wrote this page, addressing things such as-
Who am I?
What makes a total newbie think they’re qualified to give advice?
Why should you sign up for this list?
Who Am I?
My name is Evan Gilbert and I am not a copywriting guru
(pause for the door slam)
I’m not an expert
(*slam*)
In fact, when I started writing this page(Oct 6th, 2022) I hadn’t even had my first client
(*SLAAAAM*).
That was the original basis for the page. Watch me start from scratch and grow along with me. The bad news is that apparently, it takes a lot longer to design a website than it does to start a career as a copywriter…
Wait, that might be the good news…
Either way, here we are a month later, I’m finishing up the website and I’ve got as much work as I can handle.
I’m working on an exit plan from my full-time job as a welder so that I can spend even more time finding clients, writing emails for you, and improving my craft.
So now Copy Junior is about following closely in my footsteps (and hopefully picking up enough speed to blaze right past me)
I’m a complete beginner copywriter. So…
What Makes a Total Newbie Think They’re Qualified to Give Advice?
Well first off I have no time to unpack the intricacies of what it really means to be “qualified to give advice”.
And if you were expecting this to be some sort of ‘social proof’ section, guess again. I have none.
This is more of an anti-proof section. I’m not a guru. I’m not an expert.
I have no magical formula to spoonfeed you that will make you a ‘Six Figure Copywriter In One Year Or Less!’
I don’t make anything close to that much (you’ll see exactly how much I made for my first job when you unlock the survey results after joining this list).
So if you’re looking for this email list to be a magic bullet. ‘The Thing’ that will turn you into a great copywriter overnight. Look somewhere else.
I won’t be promising you that. In fact, I will promise that it will not be that.
I promise this list will NOT turn you into a Six Figure Copywriter™ at all.
The only person who could possibly do that is YOU!
The fact that I have no Six Figure Secret I’m trying to sell you is what makes Copy Junior a beneficial resource.
I have no specific angle I’m trying to pitch to you. This makes Copy Junior a relatively reliable narrator in the world of marketing email lists. I am presenting the information I’m learning, and how it has worked (or not) for me
I’m doing this for myself. I write these emails (at least two per week) to do three things that are very important to me. As well as, I believe, to every successful copywriter.
Practice copywriting
Build community
and
…
Learn how to sell
“Wait… I thought you said you weren’t like those gurus, that you wouldn’t be trying to sell us anything”
To the contrary, I’m going to try to sell you as much as I can. Possibly in every email. That being said I am NOT like those gurus I’ve mentioned.
The difference is in the how and the why of my selling to you. It’s an important difference, one that I’ll share with you shortly.
But first, to wrap up the idea of ‘Why do I think I’m Qualified to Give Advice’
I’ll just say this.
It’s really up to you if you think I’m qualified or not. It doesn’t make a ton of difference to me.
If you aren’t interested in figuring things out for yourself. This is not the place for you.
If you aren’t ready to put in the hard work mastering direct response copy takes. I truly and honestly do not think you should sign up for my email list.
Go find a guru, to take your money and confidence (not in that order), and best of luck to you.
If you’re the type of person who loves to learn from others’ experiences, synthesize new ideas, and take full ownership of your own successes as well as your failures. Come on in and sign up!
Still not convinced?
Let me tell you…
Why should I sign up for this list?

Reason #1:
I will overshare
From the “Copywriters Only” survey to backend info on how I wrote this page, there is going to be a ton of ‘behind-the-scenes’ content that most people would (probably rightfully) be ashamed to share. Not me!
I’m new, sometimes I write bad copy, and sometimes I write absolute heaters that I may have taken terrible notes for. I don’t care. I’m not going to hide it. I have no reputation to protect and honestly, there’s a lot of good that comes not only from analyzing what went right, but what was done wrong as well.
And it’s not just me and my process you’ll be getting the inside scoop on. The ‘Copywriter’s Only’ Survey gives inside information on every single one of my subscribers. You’ll have to fill it out to gain access to Copy Junior. A lifetime benefit of being subscribed to my list is getting to see those results.
This survey is populated with questions written by copywriters just like you. So you’re certain to find value in the answers.
Beyond this, I do emails devoted to critiquing the copy of my subscribers (and some, where they critique mine). So you’ll see the backend copywriting of a variety of talents. You may even end up featured!
Reason #2:
You won’t get scammed
And the FINAL REASON is…
I finished writing this page 43 days after starting my copywriting journey. From square one (really more like square 0. I knew nothing).
If you can’t write a better opt in page for an email marketing list than this right now. There must be at least something you can learn from me.
If you’re serious about progressing on your journey you should sign up. Today. Right now. Fill out the survey, and start learning.
If you can write a better opt-in page than this one, I’d love to see it…
I’m serious, I would love to see it! Sign up, fill out the survey, send me an email linking to your sales letter and I’ll check it out.
I’ll probably sign up for your list and potentially irritate you with ‘too many’ questions!
I love learning from anyone who can do something better than me and will not sleep on the invitation to do so!
